Behavior Management Philosophy

  • Provide a safe and supportive environment.
  • Understand that feelings lead to behavior.
  • All feelings are valid, the issue is how one expresses them.
  • Don't assume students know appropriate behavior.
  • Our role is to help students find more appropriate behavior patterns.
  • Students will learn what is appropriate and inappropriate by the manner in which others respond to his/her behavior.
  • Consistent rewards and consequences for behavior.

Behavior Management in the Classroom

Guiding Principles

  • Curriculum and behavior management go hand in hand.
  • Behavior systems help teachers reinforce positive behavior - not punish negative.
  • Students earn--not lose--privileges.
  • System must be easy to administer and understand.
  • Consistency, consistency, and consistency. 
  • Students own their behavior.
  • Behavior (completion of work) and academics are evenly weighted.
  • Empower the students.
